"Hi there all you
cave dwellers this is Bob Wooler
saying welcome to the Best of Cellars. We got
the Hi-Fi High and the lights down low so here we go with the Big Three
show."
THE
HEAVY JACK
STORY.....
SO FAR
Sometime
in 1998 the story began with
a 2nd hand guitar hanging around the house and a community newspaper
that
held a typical ad for "weekly guitar
lessons ".
A regular kid with some genuine drive decided to take
his guitar and give it a whirl. The
oldest of 3 brothers signs up for lessons and begins
to walk the path.
By 1999 the music had made its presence felt and was a sure-fire contagious motivator that became the catalyst for a competitive middle brother to pick up a bass guitar, check in with the same guitar teacher and choose to walk the same path. So the story continues.
Not
to be left out the
3rd
brother in the Heavy Jack
story started hitting the skins half way through 1999. Each of them
became immersed
and familiar with their own instrument of choice. Naturally over time
they figured
out they could pool their musical mojo & play as a bona
fide band. Which is exactly what they did and when they did they were
wowed & gratified to hear that they had captured & harnessed a
wild heavy &
distinctive sound all their own. During these musically formative years,
in a multitude
of basements, they would spend countless hours playing with creating
electric sound in accordance with the
great & secret show.
The story of this
power trio of brothers began in earnest in 2001 when the oldest brother
of the band, still underage at the time, scored the band's first ever
gig @ a bar called
Manhattan's.
You know what they say about
New York , if you can make it there you'll make it anywhere.
From the first gig onward
the band played everywhere & anywhere they could to hone their
skills & work their chops. Over the next 8
years the sound would expand, refine and ultimately come to be known as
the
Heavy Jack sound.
They
say the difference between a Rock & Roll Band and a Great
Rock & Roll Band is the story. The official story of Heavy Jack
began in
2005 -- but as is sometimes customary a prologue is
written.
The prologue of this story would have you
go way back but for now we can
just return to 1998. Enter
Brian
"Griff" Griffiths, who it
turns out was the guitar
teacher that advertised for "weekly guitar lessons"
in that community newspaper. Back in
the day Brian had been in a band called The Big Three .
It was one of many groups that played in the
Mersey
Beat scene of the 1960s.
Brian Griffiths is a player, who is revered by such greats as Steve Howe
of the
band Yes and also the late Rory Gallagher who was known to have said
"Brian
Griffiths was as important to me as Eric
Clapton".
As it turns out all
these years later the
beat really did go on and looking back Heavy Jack has gratitude for
those weekly
jam lessons with Brian. Serendipity had stepped in and through Brian
gave the
brothers a unique chance to absorb the vintage vibes & guitar
prowess from an
authentic guitar slinger of an era gone by.
It is true that Rock & Roll
represents freedom. It is also true that
Rock & Roll is the weaving of a story with
music. So it can be viewed as appropriate that it was an Ohio DJ by the
name of
Alan Freed that
actually freed Rock & Roll and its story in 1951 by lifting the veil
and blasting it across
the airwaves for everyone to hear.
As Heavy
Jack prepares for take-off
they give a tip of the hat to both Griff Griffiths and to
Mr. Freed. Each of these guys played a significant part in shaping
the history that allows
Heavy Jack the ability to manifest a dream into a reality. And so it
is at this junction in the Heavy Jack story after a few Rocks &
Knocks --
going about 11 13 round bouts -- that Heavy Jack is now unflinchingly
releasing
their first full-fledged Rock & Roll album. Enjoy the story as its
being told.
Rock
& Roll ain't
dead
